Whenever we play a new venue, I’m always concerned if we’re going to be on a decent bill. Sometimes bands get thrown together that have no musical consistency to them; punks bands paired up with jam bands, mixed with hip-hop, believe me it happens.) Last night, the problem was solved – I was the one who did the bill. John at the Juke Joint graciously allowed me to put together the line-up, which is a definite “put up or shut up” for any snot-nosed musician who thinks the job of a booking agent is easy. Trust me, folks. It isn’t. Luckily, it turned out pretty darn good although it wasn’t because of me. Instead, I opted to play with some of my favorite bands in the OC – The Blob and Codename Hardhat. We shared a bill with both bands last month at Kegs in Redondo and if you missed that, dude I can’t help you. The Yeasties did us the pleasure of attending as well, albeit in their hush-hush street clothes and out of make-up. There’s something to be said about getting to play with bands you like and respect, it makes it less of a gig and more of a house party where everyone enjoys the night from the first minute the songs start. And the Juke Joint kicks ass. We really liked the space, and the sound was incredible. Very rarely do we get to hear so well on stage and in front of it, and the Juke Joint did not disappoint. The wait staff was friendly as hell, and the Taco Boy next door sure helped matters. What is it with Orange County, man? Every one of my favorite venues either has a kick-ass taco/burrito place nearby (Fern's. Juke Joint.) or they get delivered to you (Doll Hut. Tropics.) That's pretty fucking awesome, friends. By the end of the night, everyone smelled like delicious al pastor and all was good with the world. There was a bit of a downer though. Hi-Fi Silence was originally scheduled to play but their bassist was in a motorcycle accident on the way to pick up their gear to come out to the Juke Joint. I understand he’s okay, but he was hospitalized. Sorry to hear that, bud – let us know when you’re up and mobile, dude. I gotta admit, I didn’t take a photo of the set list. Funny story about that – Jeremy from the Blob rushed up to the stage while were playing, grabbed the set list and then took a photo of the two of us while holding the set list… but he was pointing the camera at the audience, not us. I gotta get that photo from him, that’s better than a photo of our setlist. |
