The Morning After: The Doll Hut 2/20

Our Feb 20th show at the Doll Hut was really bittersweet – on one hand, it was an extremely kick-ass show with great performances from the Derty, OCA and the Yeastie Boys with a solid audience at one of our favorite venues in Orange County. On the other hand, it was also Johny’s last show with us as our drummer, having opted to hang up his drumsticks and start living like a normal person. However, it was quite the send off.

First of all, let me say I love playing the Doll Hut. It was one of my first gigs with Action 45, and whether we’re playing five or fifty people in the club, every time has its own magic to it. For those of you who have never been, the Doll Hut is just a mile shy of Disneyland, maybe two. At night, you can see their firework show from outside the Hut. It’s kind of a special little feeling, hearing kick-ass tunes, throwing back a beer and watching the fireworks in the horizon. The Doll Hut is also one of the few venues that stock Miller High Life, which add to the magic as well. Their bartender/promoter Lilli has told me that every time we play the Hut, they invariably run out of High Life. Often, she will order more for the cooler. The Miller Brewing People should take note: Action 45 is good for your business.

The Doll Hut is also the home of the world famous Tamale Guy, who shows up at 1am with his container of tamales of questionable meat. The Tamale Guy is half the reason you should go to the Doll Hut. Not only are the tamales an excellent capper to the night, but I always consider the Tamale Guy’s arrival to be the sign you should stop drinking and sober up for the drive home. And what better to do that with, than a tamale??

This was our first show with the Derty and OCA, both of them were 100% kick-ass. I always have problems focusing on the other bands on our bill, because either I’m trying to ramp up or ramp down for our own set. But we all liked both bands immensely. This was also a show headlined by the infamous Yeastie Boys, which… well, I never get tired of talking about one way or another.  I really think the Yeastie Boys are a spectacle that require group participation, because they’re kind of a microcosm of the OC punk music scene on their own. Now that Jeremy from the Blob is filling in Vinny Malachi’s big red clown shoes, even more so.  I am such an idiot, btw – I knew the Yeasties had a new guitarist named Jeremy, I knew the Blob’s guitarist was named Jeremy, and I even saw Rhonda from the Blob walking around the club. Did I put it together? Nooooo. Of course, Jeremy was wearing clown make-up and was without his glasses. Maybe *I* need some. Oh, did I mention Don Pie? Yeah, Don Pie also hosted the show, and Don was a hilarious edition to the evening’s antics. Oh, and Loogie was there, did I mention that? See, it was a great show! This was the best show around as Johny’s send-off!

So now what’s our plans? Drum machine. Straight up drum machine. Worked for Echo and the Bunnymen and we don't have to split the drink tickets. No, no. Seriously, the answer to that will be announced soon, we promise. And we also wish Johny the best – he’s been our drummer since the band started and helped shape our sound and has been hermano for all of us. We’ll miss him.

This show’s set list is brought to you by Dogface and Jen of the Yeastie Boys, (with Waymon peeking in from behind.) We're here for your children's birthday party. We brought our own booze.
